MANIFEST
Each brick is a chance, has its own personality, its texture, its tint.
I unearth these bricks in wastes of completed works, by individuals or at professionals’.
I select them because they are all different, and they all inspire me. They relate their history : when and where they were made, with which clay, what is their regular use and their plastic potential. Most of the time, they have been forgotten in gardens, they were covered by herbs and brambles. Sometimes, a brickworks company gets rid of them because the production is finished, stocking them is difficult, or because they have been damaged by time or bad weather. I prefer to search for bricks during spring to start my year’s production.
I carry them, wash them one by one, with the winter’s rainwater which has accumulated in my studio’s tanks. Then, I let them dry in the sun. I draw constructions, spaces, ideas, in my notebooks... Afterwards, I transform my bricks by cutting them with rainwater again.
I compose, I add, I overlap. It sorts itself out, I watch, I put it aside.
Bricks discuss together : red, pink, orange, grey, whitened...
Textures play, they are smooth, mottled, rough... Their pierced holes inspire me and look different regarding my cuts. I unveil the interior side of each brick as if I digged industrial laces by hand. Fascinated by construction and architecture, I build columns, towers, blocks of different scales, which are called Fragments. I imagine them separately or I compose them together. These are sculptures or they can be objects when I choose to integrate a lighting system in them. In the making, I generate new wastes . I classify and organize them, and they inspire me new shapes and new ideas. As some of these wastes can be too small to inspire me at the object’s scale, I developed a protocol to make [aglɔmeʀa]. I mix my bricks scraps with concrete and plaster, trying to compose with the randomness of the process.
Then, I cut the blocks I produce, it reveals strong graphism, half technical, half natural.
I sand them to give them more contrast thanks to an intriguing softness.
A long drying process takes place during summer. The method generates new wastes I use to cover old pieces of furniture, walls or panels like paintings.
This cutting and gluing stage take place quietly, inside my studio, during autumn and winter. In parallel, I collect glass : from second-hand windows to used bottles.
It allows me to play with transparency, patterns and vivid colors, to add contrast to my bricks colors. I’ve set up an experimentation lab, to create with those two kinds of materials. “Objets résiduels” are micro-architecture we can contemplate or use as table centrepieces or tray. My furnace allows me to melt my glass on my brick wastes while warming my studio in winter. The cycle seems to be complete, and creation can continue...
